About Albuquerque Country Club
Today's Country Club
The Albuquerque Country Club is conveniently situated near the downtown area, adjacent to Old town, the Rio Grande River, and historic Route 66. The Club offers its members a warm and comfortable environment for recreation, entertainment, and dining with family and friends. The Clubhouse includes dining rooms, cocktail lounge, banquet facilities, and an exercise room.
The Golf Course
This is an 18-hole course that is lightly contoured, but with an over-abundancee of trees to challenge both the amateur and the pro. A putting green, driving range and chipping green permits a golfer's practice at leisure, and a snack bar, or half-way house, on the course gives players the opportunity to "cool off" or "stoke up" before continuing their game.
Pull carts and electric golf carts with an inclement weather covering provided when needed, are available for rental, but the use of a cart is not mandatory. The Pro-shop also offers a club cleaning and storage service, and features a large selection of golfing equipment and attire for purchase. Private lessons can be arranged for upon inquiry in the Pro-shop, and group novice lessons for ladies wishing to learn the game are conducted in the spring.
Several club-sponsored tournaments are scheduled each year, including the annual "Men'sMember-Guest Invitational", the Women's Golf Association "Fairway Frolics", "Member-Guest", the "Couples' Member-Guest" and the "Men's Fall Invitational"; however, access to the course at a golfer's convenience throughout the active season is rarely a problem.
An active Junior Golf program providing lessons for the children and grandchildren of members offers an excellent way for youngsters to learn a frustrating but enjoyable game that can be played for a lifetime. Special Junior tournaments for various age brackets are held and trophies are awarded, but Juniors may also play the course when available (specified times can be found in the Pro Shop). At the end of the season, Junior golfers attend the Awards Banquet along with the Junior swimmers and Junior tennis players.
The Tennis Courts
Located just west of the club house, four tennis courts and the services of a U.S.P.T.A.
Tennis Professional are available Tuesday thru Sunday. All four courts are lighted for evening play during the warmer months. A large Pro-shop complete with shower facilities, offers tennis equipment and attire for purchase as well as a racquet re-stringing service. Lessons for men, women and children are offered by the Tennis Pro, with various tournaments and special tennis events taking place during the year. Highlighted tournaments include the Valentine's Day and July 4th Mixed Doubles events, a Parent-Child tournament, the Club Championship (singles, doubles and mixed doubles) for adults and Juniors, and the popular "Albuquerque Turkey" Mixed Doubles tournament held in November. A variety of unique prizes is awarded after some of the events. Baileys Irish Cream, corned beef, or even a turkey dinner (the actual bird, a turkey pot pie, or a can of cranberry sauce) separate the winners from the losers in the
November "turkey shoot."
Special adult playing times are offered, such as the Men's Excellence Tennis on Saturday mornings, ladies' weekly clinics, Thursday Mixed Doubles, and various other activities.
A Junior Tennis program finds many children of various age levels on the tennis courts at specified times, from the active teenager to the younger five or six years old. Lessons are given by the Tennis Pro either in private or in same age groups, and tournaments geared to the young tennis player are sprinkled throughout the season. Junior tennis players also
attend the end of season Awards Banquet along with the Junior golfers and swimmers.
The Swimming Facilities
The swimming pool is a 25 meter junior Olympic-size pool, and there is also a separate toddlers' wading pool. Chairs and tables with umbrellas are poolside and there is a raised deck west of the pool, as well as another sunbathing deck on the north side. A snack bar is available for light food and non-alcoholic beverages. Attractive and well placed coachman lamps, combined with underwater lighting, are conducive to in-season evening poolside parties which members may wish to plan.
Our trained aquatic staff conducts group and private swimming lessons for both children and adults, and also offers other activities such as a water aerobics class, an infant drown-proofing program, emergency water safety, etc. An active Swim Team engages in competitive meets with other Albuquerque and surrounding area swim teams. This Junior program is open to
youngsters able to swim the length of the pool unaided. At the end of the season a combined Awards Banquet honors Junior swimmers as well as the Junior tennis players and Junior golfers.
The swimming pool complex opens on the Saturday beginning Memorial Day weekend and closes for the season after the Labor Day weekend. There are special activities and programs in the pool on both Memorial and Labor Day to open and close the season.
